Obesity Causes and Treatments

Each one of us love and wish to have a great fit body. A fit body is not just something one can flaunt off but is also a necessity to ensure a healthy life. However, this is not the case today. The sedentary life style, spending hours in front of the computer all day long, and minimal physical work has led to obesity. Obesity or being overweight is a health problem seen in all ages, sex and countries all over the world. It is not something associated with aging but is associated with many other factors like diet, lifestyle, etc., and thus is prevalent in children as well. Let us know more about the causes of obesity, its treatments, and its effects on one’s health.

What is Obesity?

There is a particular Body Mass Index (BMI) figured out for everyone based on one’s height and age. When one’s weight exceeds the BMI set for one, one is said to be obese or overweight. For example, for a person whose height is around 5 feet, should ideally weigh 50 kg. When one’s weight exceeds this given BMI, one is obese.

Causes of Obesity:

Obesity is not something that occurs within a day. A person tends to gain fats and grow obese gradually. It is only that we tend to ignore the symptoms of the same. The beginning of obesity is marked by accumulation of fats on the abdomen, which gradually spreads to different parts of the body.

There are many different causes of obesity,  as follows:

Lifestyle - sedentary lifestyle

Lack of physical activity – no work out or lack of physical activity at work

Diet – junk food, consumption of too much fats, etc.

Genes – hereditary, and many more

Out of the above given causes, hereditary causes is something that cannot be controlled to a great extent. Causes like  lifestyle, physical activity, and diet are controllable factors.

Statistics of Obesity:

The USA has been witnessing a high rate of obesity and the same has been rising with time. In 2011, no state had an obesity rate of less than 20%. As per a survey, around 35.7% or one-third of USA’s adult population is obese. Alternatively, around 17% or 12.5 million children of USA, aged between 2-19 years are obese. The figures say it all.

Treatments for Obesity:

Besides healthy diet and work out, there are some medications and surgery that help lose weight. However, the same should be opted only in the most complicated stages of obesity. One should first try to get rid of this problem by resorting to a healthy lifestyle. When it becomes completely impossible to control, the doctors may suggest  treatments and surgeries. Ortislat, Bariatric surgery, and certain medications help in controlling obesity to a great extent. However, these can lead to side-effects and therefore, losing weight naturally is advisable.

The causes of obesity prove that it is a health problem caused due to negligence of one towards one’s health. Arrest obesity in its initial phase by controlling the causes of obesity, and live a healthy life.

Tendons-Treatment for Tendonitis

Tendons also called sinews are the ropes of the body that connect bones to the muscles. Tendons, thus, play a vital role in normal activities of the body such as walking, running, jumping, rolling etc. that needs muscles to connect to the bones.

What are tendons

They are flexible tissues, made up of cells called as tenocytes. Tendons are strong flexible tissues, but overuse of these tissues or any injury can harm its strength and cause inflammation to it.

Overuse of tendons can cause tears in its collagen fibers. Once tendons get damaged, it may not heal easily and demand medical attention. Tendonitis is a condition described as inflammation of the tendons. As a treatment for tendonitis, anti-inflammatory drugs are administered in the patient, to relieve inflammation. In addition, rest is prescribed to the person, who has suffered tendonitis.

Tendonitis Treatment

As discussed above tendonitis can be difficult to heal automatically over a period of time. Although, medical intervention is helpful, but it alone cannot be sufficient. Depending upon the intensity of inflammation, tendonitis episode will last for either a few days or for weeks/months. Following are a few treatment techniques for tendonitis that can be used in combination with self care tips that lead to strengthen ligaments

Rest

Rest is the best treatment for tendon related injuries and tendonitis. The inflammation goes off soon with rest. If complete rest is not possible, you may at least stop doing the activity that caused tendonitis. Rest the affected tendons. Resting time will be relative to the damage caused, the more the damage more rest will be required. Also, using shin or calf supports, strapping tapes or bandages may help reduce the movement of tendons and ease healing process.

Painkillers

Taking painkillers can be an instant treatment to the pain caused due to tendonitis. Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) that can be taken to relieve pain. However, these are good for short-term pain relief and should not be taken for too long You can also apply painkiller gel or spray on the affected area.

Cold Packs

Inflammation goes off with cold packs. Applying ice packs over the inflamed areas can relieve pain as well as inflammation. Do not apply ice directly on the affected area, as it can cause cold burn. Instead, wrap some ice cubes in a towel and apply it on the inflamed area. Repeat this thrice a day.

Physiotherapy

If you are suffering from severe tendonitis or a tendon injury, above treating options can relieve pain, but cannot really strengthen the tendon again. In such a case, seek a physiotherapist to prescribe the required physio and exercises to give a long term effect.

Surgery

This is the last resort for a few patients with prolonged tendonitis.

Tendons are the connecting tissues connecting the bones to the muscles. These tissues may undergo wear and tear due to it overuse and this may cause inflammation. Inflammation of tendons is termed as tendonitis and it is a common medical syndrome. No medical intervention is usually required for tendonitis and it may go with rest and painkillers. In some rare and severe cases, surgery is required for tendonitis.

This usually happens due to the damage caused by the cells of the skin. So it is very necessary to take proper skin cancer care.

Skin cancer appears to begin in the lower layer of the patient’s epidermis. It means the skin’s exterior layer. The epidermis constitute of various cell types.

They are as follows:

•    Basal cells
•    Melanocytes
•    Squamous cells

These are also the types of skin cancers.

The primary cause or the main reason for the occurrence of skin cancer is the UV radiation (Ultraviolet radiation). The energy released from the sun is a form of radiation. This radiation includes the invisible rays as well as the sun light visible to naked eye. The infrared radiation which is not visible is a cause for the heat of sunlight. Similarly, the ultraviolet radiation causes sunburn, being invisible.

The UV can be responsible for many skin medical problems. Such UV rays prove harmful to the DNA. The DNA is a genetic material which makes the genes. These genes are responsible for the growth and control of the cells of the skin.

A severe damage of the genes results into uncontrolled growth of the genes. This can cause skin cancer. It is a known fact that UV rays can cause many other problems such as wrinkled skin, sunburns etc.

There are certain symptoms or early signs which can help us to understand that cancer cells have developed in a patient’s skin. These symptoms or early signs are:

•    A spot or an ulcer in the areas where the skin has suffered damage. This usually doesn’t heal before 4 weeks time.
